Accessible Opera
Opera Collective was formed to create performance opportunities and a support structure in which singers and pianists share ideas and constructive criticism in a safe environment.
Our mission is to make opera accessible and affordable to the general public by presenting engaging evenings of vocal music, including opera, art song, operetta and musical theatre.
Opera Collective was founded in August of 2005. We currently consist of 10 core members, with rotating singers and pianists on our roster. Opera Collective is an active part of the Music Under New York program, and performs twice a week at various spots throughout Manhattan. We have been featured three times in the “Summer Sundays Series” at Snug Harbor Cultural Center on Staten Island. We have done educational outreach in NY and CT, and hope to continue to teach students about opera. We gave our Manhattan debut concert in November of 2006 in collaboration with Kids & Dreamers Productions, and in November of 2007 collaborated with them again in a scenes program based on the 7 Deadly Sins. Opera Collective has also been featured several times on NHK’s documentary series “New York Streets”.
Our concert tonight will include scenes and arias from Carmen, La Traviata, The Marriage of Figaro, Madame Butterfly and La Boheme.
